Challenging Via Ferrata at the Entrance to the Schnals Valley
Spectacular Climbing Route with 25 m Suspension Bridge, Historic “Waal” Water Channel and Sporty Sections
The Hoachwool via ferrata, located at Naturno at the entrance of the Schnalstal valley opposite Reinhold Messner’s Juval Castle, is one of the more technically demanding via ferrata in South Tyrol, perfect for experienced via ferrata climbers.
The name “Hoachwool” comes from a historic irrigation system – the so-called “Waal” – built around 1850, which the route crosses in its middle section. The partially authentically reconstructed wooden channels of this old waterway give the via ferrata its unique character.
A standout feature is the impressive 25-meter-long suspension cable bridge at the start of the climb, spanning a stream and providing a spectacular introduction to the route.
Despite its valley location, the Hoachwool via ferrata requires considerable endurance and technical skill due to its length and difficulty. In the upper section, climbers can choose between several route options: an easier C/D route featuring a striking giant ladder offers an exciting experience, while two more challenging variations increase the difficulty for advanced climbers.
