At 3851 metres, the Königspitze (Gran Zebrù) is the second highest peak in the Ortler Alps after the Ortler (3905 metres) and an absolute must for every mountaineer. The approach takes us over the Stelvio Pass to Bormio and on to Santa Caterina Valfurva. From there it takes about one and a half hours to reach the Pizzini hut, where we spend the night.
The next day, we ascend via climbing tracks and initially flat terrain to the Gran Zebru glacier. We reach the Königsjoch via a steep gully. From there, depending on the conditions, we head up a steep firn flank or a steep rocky ridge to the upper shoulder 150 metres below the summit. We soon reach the summit via another steep flank.
