Ortler Hintergrat ("back ridge")

I have had the honour of climbing the Ortler over 200 times with guests on various routes. Changing conditions, different weather conditions and the altitude, which should not be underestimated, make climbing the Ortler, the highest mountain in South Tyrol, a very special experience.

Compared to the normal route, the back ridge is not particularly more difficult but requires more stamina and offers breathtaking and exposed ridge climbing, especially in the final section.

Climb the highest mountain in South Tyrol with me via the Hintergrat, starting from the Hintergrathütte and descending via the normal route. The best time to climb the Ortler via the Hintergrat ridge from the Hintergrathütte is from mid-June to the end of September.

The best time to climb the Ortler is usually mid-June to the end of July and September.

Schedule:

We meet the day before at the Hintergrathütte by 5.30pm at the latest. It is best to use the Langenstein car park (outward and return) and walk to the Hintergrathütte via trail no. 3 in about an hour.

We will book the hut for you.

Over dinner together we discuss the route and prepare our equipment. Breakfast at the Hintergrathütte is usually at 3.30 am and the tour starts at 4.00 am. After an ascent time of 4-5 hours, we reach the summit of the Ortler. The descent is via the Ortler Normalweg and we will arrive at the Payerhütte around lunchtime. The descent from the Payerhütte to Sulden takes about 2.5 hours.
