Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata – Guided Ascent of the Plattkofel
An alpine via ferrata adventure in the Dolomites
The Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata leads to the Plattkofel (2,964 m) – one of the most striking peaks of the Dolomites. While the southwest side rises gently with long scree slopes, the northeast face drops dramatically into the Plattkofelkar. First climbed in 1895 by German mountaineer Oskar Schuster, this bold route is today equipped with steel cables at its most demanding sections, but remains only partly secured in line with its alpine tradition.
The via ferrata requires surefootedness, good fitness, and alpine experience. With a certified mountain guide by your side, you are always safe and can fully focus on the spectacular route and the breathtaking Dolomite panoramas.
The reward is a summit experience with unique views into the Langkofel and Plattkofel cirques, across to the Marmolada Glacier, and down over the vast meadows of the Seiser Alm – true Dolomite contrasts at their finest.
Itinerary
The starting point is the Sellajoch Pass, reached from St. Christina in Val Gardena via Wolkenstein. A cable car takes you up to the Langkofel Col (2,681 m) near the Toni Demetz Hut. From here, the trail descends through the Langkofel cirque to the Langkofel Hut (2,253 m), before continuing into the quieter Plattkofel cirque where the Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata begins.
The first section is unprotected over loose scree and can be icy depending on the season. The main via ferrata then follows, with cables leading over exposed ledges, chimneys, and a gully up to the Plattkofel middle summit (2,958 m). From here, both the northwest and southeast summits can be reached with little effort.
At the summit, a magnificent panorama awaits: the Seiser Alm, the Langkofel, the Sella Massif, and the mighty Marmolada. The descent follows the Plattkofel shoulder down to the Plattkofel Hut (2,300 m). The scenic Friedrich August Trail then leads past the Rifugio Sandro Pertini and the Friedrich August Hut – perfect for a final break – back to the Sellajoch, with wonderful views into the Val Duron.
With a certified mountain guide, the Oskar Schuster Via Ferrata becomes a safe, unforgettable, and truly alpine adventure in the Dolomites – perfect for those who want to combine challenge and spectacular landscapes.
