The Via Ferrata ai Costoni di Croda Rossa di Sesto (2,965 m) is one of the easier yet most scenic via ferratas in the Dolomites (difficulty level A/B). The route mostly follows historic World War I paths, where hikers encounter trenches, caverns, and other historic relics. This combination of a well-secured via ferrata route, history, and stunning panoramic views makes this tour a truly special experience.

The tour starts at the Rotwand cable car valley station in Moos near Sexten, which provides easy access to the Rotwand meadows. From there, the approach to the via ferrata passes the Rotwand peaks, offering early views of the impressive north face of Croda Rossa.

The via ferrata itself begins with a long iron ladder and continues over additional ladders, secured steep sections, a chimney, and partly rocky and scree terrain along the north face. Easy to moderate via ferrata sections alternate with walking sections, creating a varied and enjoyable mountain experience. Spectacular views repeatedly open up over the Fischleintal, Sexten, the Sexten Dolomites, and the Carnic Alps.

The historical traces of World War I are particularly impressive: old trenches, caverns, and ruined fortifications bear witness to the heavy fighting between 1915 and 1917. This historic backdrop gives the tour a unique atmosphere.
