De Luca-Innerkofler Via Ferrata on Paternkofel
Historic Via Ferrata with Unique Views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Sexten Dolomites
The De Luca-Innerkofler Via Ferrata on Paternkofel (2,744 m) is one of the most fascinating and spectacular via ferrata routes in the Sexten Dolomites. This historic route passes through old World War I tunnels and along dramatic rock ledges directly to the Paternkofel summit, offering one of the most stunning views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and the surrounding Dolomite panorama.
The tour starts at Rifugio Auronzo and initially follows a well-maintained hiking trail over the Paternsattel to the Dreizinnen Hut (Rifugio Locatelli), where the entry to the De Luca-Innerkofler Via Ferrata is located. The via ferrata itself begins with an impressive passage through the mountain: for several hundred meters, the path runs through tunnels that were once part of wartime fortifications, now offering a uniquely varied climbing experience.
After the tunnels, the route continues along secured sections with steel cables and footholds over the north ridge of Paternkofel. On the way to the Gamsscharte, easy via ferrata sections (B/C) alternate with alpine walking passages, before the final section leads to the Paternkofel summit. From the summit, climbers are rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Dolomite summits of the Sexten Dolomites, and the surrounding valleys.
Those wishing to extend the tour can combine the via ferrata with the Sentiero delle Forcelle (Schartenweg): this historic wartime path leads from the Gamsscharte back toward Büllelejoch and further into the Fischleintal. This combination creates an impressive circular tour with history, rock climbing enjoyment, and breathtaking views.
Accompanied by a certified mountain guide from South Tyrol, you can safely enjoy this historic via ferrata – focusing fully on enjoyment, panoramas, and alpine history.
