Via Ferrata on the Ifinger above Meran 2000
Experience a spectacular via ferrata with breathtaking views over the Meran region
The Heini-Holzer-Via Ferrata is one of the most beautiful via ferratas in South Tyrol and climbs the striking rock faces of the Ifinger massif above Meran 2000. This varied via ferrata was dedicated to the famous South Tyrolean extreme mountaineer Heini Holzer and offers an impressive mountain adventure with spectacular panoramic views.
The tour starts at the Piffinger Köpfl cable car station at Meran 2000. From here, a roughly 45-minute approach along a well-marked hiking trail leads to the via ferrata entrance.
The route climbs about 500 vertical meters through varied rock terrain with several secured sections at difficulty level B/C. Right at the start, a steep rock ramp challenges climbers, followed by airy traverses, rocky steps, and short hiking sections. A highlight of the via ferrata is the so-called “Engelskante,” an exposed ridge with fantastic vertical views.
During the ascent, you’ll enjoy impressive vistas of the Texel Group, the Meran region, and, on clear days, even the Ortler group. At the end of the via ferrata, you reach the scenic grassy ridge below the Ifinger massif. From here, a short detour leads either in a few minutes to the Little Ifinger (2,552 m) or via another brief B/C section to the Great Ifinger (2,581 m).
The descent follows marked hiking trails towards the Kuhleiten Hut and then back to the Meran 2000 cable car station.
Accompanied by an experienced mountain guide from South Tyrol, you can safely enjoy this via ferrata and fully focus on the varied climbing sections and stunning panoramas – an unforgettable via ferrata adventure above Meran awaits you.
