Via Ferrata Tabaretta below the North Face of Ortler
Experience one of the most spectacular and challenging via ferratas in the Alps
The Tabaretta Via Ferrata in the Ortler region is one of the most impressive and demanding via ferratas in the Alps. Already during the approach through the rugged high alpine terrain above Sulden, it becomes clear that a true adventure awaits: the massive north faces of the Ortler dominate the scenery and create an impressive alpine atmosphere. The route ascends around 500 vertical meters through steep, partly foothold-scarce rock walls up into high alpine terrain above 3,000 meters.
The approach starts from Sulden on well-marked trails leading to the Tabaretta Hut (2,556 m). Just behind the hut, an exposed path leads to the start of the via ferrata. Alternatively, the approach can be shortened by taking the chairlift to the Langenstein upper station.
The via ferrata itself requires significant strength, endurance, and alpine experience. The route mainly follows steep, compact rock slabs and corners and reaches difficulty level E, making it one of the most difficult via ferratas in South Tyrol. Several exposed sections, demanding traverses, and steep pitches challenge both technique and stamina. At the same time, the route impresses with its direct line through the rock face and spectacular views of the surrounding peaks of the Ortler Alps.
After exiting onto the ridge, a short walk leads to the Julius Payer Hut (3,029 m), located directly below the Ortler and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding glaciers.
The descent follows a marked hiking trail back to the Tabaretta Hut and continues down to Sulden.
Together with an experienced mountain guide from South Tyrol, you can safely tackle this high alpine via ferrata and fully focus on the demanding climbing and the impressive mountain scenery around the Ortler – an unforgettable adventure for experienced via ferrata climbers.
