Guided Ascent of Weisskugel

Via Oberettes Hut to the Second Highest Peak of the Ötztal Alps

At 3,739 metres, Weisskugel (Palla Bianca) is the second highest summit of the Ötztal Alps and one of the most impressive objectives for a guided alpine mountaineering tour in South Tyrol. The classic route combines a spectacular glacier tour with an exposed summit ridge and rewards climbers with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks of the Eastern Alps.

After the approach, we spend the night at the Oberettes Hut, beautifully located at the foot of Weisskugel in the unspoilt Matsch Valley. Early the next morning, we follow the marked trail to the Matscher Glacier and ascend across crevassed glacier terrain towards the Hintereisjoch. From there, we continue via the steeper Matscher Wandl and the exposed yet technically easy south ridge (UIAA I) to reach the summit of Weisskugel. The descent follows the same route back to the Oberettes Hut and then down into the valley.

The Weisskugel ascent via Oberettes Hut is considered one of the finest alpine tours in the Ötztal Alps.
